There are two Burger Boogaloo after parties on the night of Fourth of July, but one in particular really caught my eye.
When I saw that Juan Wauters was playing on July 4th, I burst with childish existential joy. Since that’s how Wauters’ music makes me feel, like a naïve child with too many questions. Not only that, but the headliner of that night is the Clorox Girls (not girls and I am not sure if they bleach their hair) stopping in Oakland for their reunion tour. Even local Oakland band Meat Market and Burger Records band White Night are set to play.
I only started listening to Juan Wauters fairly recently, because I have been locked in my room listening to 90’s twee. Wauters is a perfect exit from that the brightly kinder room, because his sound brings back similar feelings as Daniel Johnston and Beat Happening have for years. He is signed under Captured Tracks records, who also brought us the sounds of Mac DeMarco and his gapped teeth.
Juan Wauters came to New York from Uruguay, and ended up creating music that does the same thing it did for him to the listeners: makes you feel less alone in your existential panic. He is also known for the band The Beets, and released his sophomore album Who Me? this past May.
